Durk Derrick Banks, professionally known as Lil Durk, is an American rapper born on October 19, 1992, and is widely regarded as a pioneer of Chicago drill music, becoming its most commercially successful figure. He began his musical journey in 2010 with early tracks like “Lamron Wasted” and “L’s Bitch” featuring Lil Reese before gaining local acclaim with singles such as “Sneak Dissin’” and “I’ma Hitta.” His early mixtapes, including I’m a Hitta (2011), I’m Still a Hitta (2012), and Life Ain’t No Joke (2012), established him in the Chicago rap scene. The success of his track “L’s Anthem” led to a joint deal with Def Jam Recordings and his label Only the Family (OTF), which he founded in 2010. He solidified his reputation with the Signed to the Streets mixtape series (2013–2014), earning him a spot in the 2014 XXL Freshman Class. His studio debut, Remember My Name (2015) and follow-up Lil Durk 2X (2016) had moderate success before he parted ways with Def Jam in 2018. That year, after independently releasing Just Cause Y’all Waited, he signed with Alamo Records and soon broke into mainstream success with hits like “Viral Moment,” “3 Headed Goat,” and “Backdoor.” His rise continued with high-profile collaborations on Drake’s “Laugh Now Cry Later” and Pooh Shiesty’s “Back in Blood,” while his albums The Voice (2020), The Voice of the Heroes (2021, with Lil Baby), and 7220 (2022) all saw major commercial success. In 2023, his album Almost Healed, led by the J. Cole-assisted single “All My Life,” peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance. A four-time Grammy nominee, Lil Durk is also known for mentoring rising talent, including the late King Von. Despite his accomplishments, he faced serious legal issues, including an October 2024 arrest on a conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire charge related to rapper Quando Rondo and suspicion of involvement in a separate 2022 plot. Lil Durk remains a central figure in modern hip-hop, known for blending street authenticity with melodic versatility.
