About "Nia Ashley"

Biography

Nia Ashley is an award-winning writer, producer, and media artist born and based in Brooklyn, whose work delves into the complexities of queer relationships, often centering queer and queered women infused with chaotic bisexual energy. Raised in a multi-ethnic Black household by career educators and multi-hyphenate creatives, Nia developed a deep connection to language and identity, which she channels into characters navigating layered, intersectional experiences. At just 18, her feature screenplay Black Swan Records, telling the story of the first Black-owned recording company in the U.S., earned a screenplay award at the Tribeca Film Festival. She has since written and produced acclaimed short films, including Ride, The Bloom, I-57, and Cuidate, the latter of which received the National Board of Review Student Grant. Her stage work has premiered at notable venues such as Playwrights Horizons and The Tank. A graduate of Barnard College and Brooklyn College’s MFA Screenwriting program, Nia also completed the Script Coordinator track of the 2022 WGI Support Staff Training Program. Her artistic inspirations include feminine aesthetics, comic book villains, and tear-away corsets.
