About "Dance Gavin Dance"

Biography

Dance Gavin Dance is an American post-hardcore band formed in Sacramento, California, in 2005. Known for their eclectic fusion of genres—including progressive rock, math rock, screamo, funk, and jazz fusion—the band has cultivated a distinctive sound characterized by intricate guitar work, dynamic vocal interplay, and experimental compositions. The current lineup features lead guitarist Will Swan, drummer Matthew Mingus, unclean vocalist Jon Mess, and lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Andrew Wells. Swan and Mingus are the only members who have appeared on every studio album.

Dance Gavin Dance’s discography includes a series of influential albums, beginning with their debut EP Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean (2006) and followed by studio albums such as Downtown Battle Mountain (2007), Dance Gavin Dance (2008), Happiness (2009), and Downtown Battle Mountain II (2011). Subsequent releases like Acceptance Speech (2013), Instant Gratification (2015), Mothership (2016), Artificial Selection (2018), Afterburner (2020), and Jackpot Juicer (2022) have solidified their reputation for musical innovation.

The band has experienced numerous lineup changes over the years, particularly among vocalists. Notable former members include Jonny Craig, Kurt Travis, and Tilian Pearson. Pearson, who joined in 2012, departed in April 2024 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Their upcoming eleventh studio album, Pantheon, is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025. This album marks the first with Andrew Wells as co-lead vocalist and features contributions from artists like George Clinton and former vocalist Kurt Travis. To promote the album, the band announced the “Return Of The Robot Tour,” set to take place in May and June 2025 across North America.

Dance Gavin Dance’s ability to blend diverse musical styles and navigate internal changes has earned them a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim within the post-hardcore and progressive rock scenes.
