About "Jackson Wang"

Biography

Jackson Wang (Chinese: 王嘉爾; born Wang Ka-yee on March 28, 1994) is a Hong Kong rapper, singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and entrepreneur. A former elite athlete, Wang transitioned from being a champion fencer to becoming an international K-pop and solo music sensation. Known for his dynamic artistry and cross-cultural appeal, he is one of the most influential Chinese entertainers in the world today.

Born in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong, Jackson comes from a family of accomplished athletes—his father Wang Ruiji was a professional fencer, and his mother Zhou Ping was a former gymnast. He began fencing at age ten and soon rose to national prominence, joining the Hong Kong national fencing team and winning gold at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship in 2011.

While preparing for the 2012 London Olympics, Jackson was scouted by a representative from South Korea’s JYP Entertainment during a basketball game at his school. After ranking first among 2,000 applicants in the 2010 global auditions, he made the life-changing decision to decline a fencing scholarship to Stanford University and pursue a career in music. In 2011, he moved to Seoul, South Korea, to begin intensive K-pop training.

Jackson debuted in 2014 as a member of the South Korean boy band GOT7 under JYP Entertainment. The group enjoyed significant success across Asia and beyond. In 2017, he launched his own company Team Wang, where he serves as CEO, creative director, and lead designer for its fashion division, Team Wang Design.

In 2019, he made his official solo debut with the album Mirrors, which debuted at No. 32 on the US Billboard 200, making him one of the few Chinese solo artists to chart in the U.S. His second album, Magic Man (2022), reached No. 15, solidifying his international credibility as a solo artist. Following his departure from JYP in 2021, Jackson also formed the Chinese hip-hop supergroup Panthepack under his own label.

Outside music, Jackson has become a cultural icon and fashion tastemaker. In 2020, he was ranked 41st on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 and rose to 10th in 2021. As of September 2024, he leads all Chinese celebrities on Instagram with over 32.8 million followers, and maintains a massive global fanbase across YouTube, Spotify, and other platforms.

Jackson Wang continues to bridge the East and West through music, fashion, and business, redefining what it means to be a modern global superstar.
