Biography

Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus (born 21 May 1997), professionally known as Joeboy, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter celebrated for his vibrant fusion of Afro-pop and R&B. He first gained prominence in 2017 after a viral cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” which caught the attention of Nigerian artist Mr Eazi, who signed him under the emPawa Africa initiative. His official debut single, “Fààjí,” featuring Mr. Eazi, marked the beginning of his rapid ascent in the music scene. In 2019, Joeboy’s breakout hit “Baby” catapulted him into stardom, followed by the equally successful “Beginning.” Both tracks were accompanied by viral visualizers that amassed tens of millions of views. That same year, he released his debut EP, Love & Light, which featured fan favorites like “Don’t Call Me” and “All for You.” He went on to win Best Artiste in African Pop at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards and Best Pop at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival, along with nominations at The Headies and City People Entertainment Awards. His debut album, Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, arrived in 2021, followed by his sophomore album, Body & Soul, in 2023, which included hits like “Sip (Alcohol)” and “Duffel Bag.” In November 2023, he dropped the emotional single “Only God Save Me” and followed it with the EP Body, Soul & Spirit. In February 2024, Joeboy launched his own label, Young Legend, under a partnership with Warner Music Africa, and shortly after, released the widely acclaimed single “Osadebe.” Joeboy continues to be a defining voice in African pop music, blending heartfelt storytelling with irresistible melodies.
