John Ighodaro, professionally known as Johnny Drille, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer celebrated for his soulful sound and heartfelt lyrics. Born on July 5, 1990, in Edo State, Nigeria, Drille grew up in a close-knit family led by his father, a school principal and clergyman. With four siblings and a musically rich upbringing in his father’s church, he began singing at an early age and developed a deep love for music.
Drille studied English and Literature at the University of Benin, Benin City, where his artistic voice continued to evolve. His big break came in 2015 when he released a cover of Di’Ja’s “Awww,” which caught the attention of Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy. This pivotal moment led to a record deal with Mavin Records in February 2017.
Before his signing, Drille had competed in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013, showcasing his talent to a wider audience. His debut single, “Wait for Me,” released in 2015, received critical acclaim and earned a nomination for Best Alternative Song at The Headies 2016. In 2016, he collaborated with fellow Project Fame alum Niniola on the track “Start All Over.”
Johnny Drille’s debut album, a 14-track project, was released on September 3, 2021, further solidifying his status as one of Nigeria’s most distinct and emotionally resonant voices in alternative and folk-inspired music. With a unique blend of acoustic soul, folk, and Afro-influences, Johnny Drille continues to redefine the soundscape of Nigerian music.
