About "Torres"

Biography

Mackenzie Ruth Scott (born January 23, 1991), known professionally as Torres, is an American indie rock singer-songwriter acclaimed for their emotionally charged performances and bold lyrical introspection. Their music blends raw rock instrumentation with poetic storytelling, often delving into themes of identity, spirituality, and personal transformation.

Born in Orlando, Florida, and adopted at birth, Scott was raised in Macon, Georgia, in a conservative Christian household. The youngest of three children, they were immersed in music from a young age—learning the flute and piano, singing in the church choir, and performing hymns weekly at a nursing home. Their passion for musical theatre began early, sparked by The Phantom of the Opera and nurtured through school productions such as Fiddler on the Roof. As a teenager, Scott picked up the guitar and began writing and performing their own songs.

While studying at Belmont University in Nashville, Scott recorded their debut album, Torres, in a five-day session at Tony Joe White’s home studio with producer Ryan McFadden. Released on January 22, 2013, the self-titled album was met with critical acclaim for its raw emotion and minimalist yet powerful arrangements. Shortly after its release, Torres played their first live show in Nashville at The Basement and later relocated to Bushwick, Brooklyn, to further pursue their artistic career.

Torres quickly gained recognition within the indie music community, touring extensively across the U.S. and Europe. They have shared stages with artists such as Sharon Van Etten, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Hamilton Leithauser, and Okkervil River. In 2014, Scott collaborated with Van Etten on the album Are We There and released the single “New Skin” through Weathervane Music, further cementing their status as a rising voice in indie rock.

Torres is celebrated not only for their musical talent but also for challenging conventions around gender, faith, and emotional expression. With each release, Scott continues to evolve, pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be a fearless, independent artist in the 21st century.
