Tyler grew up in the Los Angeles area, primarily raised by his mother. He developed an early fascination with music, designing imaginary album covers and teaching himself piano by age 14. Before making music full-time, he worked various jobs, including at Starbucks and FedEx.
Tyler co-founded the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) in 2007. The group’s raw, rebellious energy — and Tyler’s shocking, darkly comedic lyrics — gained a cult following online.
His debut mixtape Bastard (2009) and album Goblin (2011) showcased his confrontational style and distinctive deep voice, with the single “Yonkers” propelling him into the mainstream .
