Jordan Terrell Carter, known professionally as Playboi Carti, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter recognized for his experimental musical style and fashion-forward image. Born on September 13, 1995 (or 1996, as some sources suggest) in Atlanta, Georgia, Carti grew up on the city's south side. His early musical influences included artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Lil Jon, Gucci Mane, and Jeezy.
Carti began his music career under the moniker Sir Cartier before adopting the name Playboi Carti. In 2014, he signed with the local underground label Awful Records. His unique sound and style quickly garnered attention, leading to a deal with A$AP Mob's AWGE label, in partnership with Interscope Records, in 2016.
His eponymous debut mixtape, released in 2017, featured the hit singles "Magnolia" and "Wokeuplikethis" (featuring Lil Uzi Vert), both of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The mixtape's success propelled Carti into the mainstream music scene. He followed up with his debut studio album, Die Lit, in 2018, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200.
After a two-year hiatus, Carti released his second studio album, Whole Lotta Red, in 2020. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received positive reviews, with Rolling Stone later including it in their list of the "200 Greatest Hip-Hop Albums of All Time." In 2024, Carti featured on ¥$'s single "Carnival," which became his first song to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. He is currently preparing to release his third studio album, I Am Music.
Beyond music, Playboi Carti is known for his distinctive fashion sense and has been involved in various modeling endeavors. His influence extends into the fashion world, where he is recognized for his avant-garde style.
